Blog Wit RDJ Day... and Everybody's Celebratin'

Hey young world. It's your boy RDJizzy, here to drop some RDJism -- no wait, that sounds nasty. Although your moms didn't think so last night.

(I'm just kidding. I don't know your moms.)

This is my version of a Wex's Wednesdays-type list. Today's topic combines the two genres I love and kind of assume people that around me usually hate.

Best References In Rap Lyrics To Heavy Metal Bands

1. Charlie Brown, in ATCQ feat. LONS, "Scenario (Remix)": "Remix mad kick / More than Metallica!"

A savvy lyric, no doubt referencing Lars Ulrich's famed double-kick drum attack, most notably on display in the climactic section of their 1988 opus, "One". Goddamn, I loved that band. Still do. I'm a member of metallica.com and have downloaded some of their recent shows, and they sound as good as ever! Their set lists are focusing much more on their 80s stuff now -- they're performing "Disposable Heroes", "Blackened", and other chestnuts in their entirety -- and they just rawk.

2. Malik B., in The Roots' "Proceed": "I can make Conan and the Titans clash / And I can make Metallica and Guns N' Roses crash."

Anyone remember the 1992 megatour with Metallica, Guns N' Roses, and Faith No More (circa their best album, 'Angel Dust'?) Anyone remember how it got cancelled/postponed after that infamous night in Montreal when James Hetfield burned his hand in a pyrotechnic miscue (karma, I say, for the band getting too fancy and arena-rock) AND Axl Rose stormed offstage after coming on late, and that sparked a huge riot? I had tickets for the Vancouver show at BC Place -- our football stadium with a roof that looks like a giant inflatable mattress (ridiculous) -- and I had stayed up ALL NIGHT to get those tickets and I got mononucleosis because I was so tired and run-down and then the effin' show got cancelled. Those were my three favourite bands in the world at the time, too. I got to see Metallica plenty of other times, and saw FNM too at a club show. Never did get to see GnR.
I'm still mad.

3. Chuck D. & Flavor Flav, in Public Enemy's "Bring The Noise": "Wax is for Anthrax / Still it can rock bells"

Quite the shout-out, kind of out-of-the-blue at the time, and it of course spawned the Anthrax/P.E. collabo on the re-recording of the same song, which arguably paved the way for the whole Judgement Night thing and eventually the whole excreble late-90's rock-rap thing, but was a pretty great track all the same. Apparently Anthrax was hella honoured to be mentioned by P.E.. I would be too.

4. Phife in ATCQ, "The Hop": "You might as well do Megadeth / Y'all punk MC's better save your freaking breath"

One of the better songs on '96's lackluster "Beats, Rhymes, and Life". Megadeth is a strange band. They have one absolutely amazing album -- 1990's "Rust In Peace" -- that they never matched, before or since. It features some of the most amazing guitar part writing and rhythm section arrangements I've ever heard. I'm sure Phife didn't mean to dis.

There's gotta be more; help me out, yo!

love,
RDJ

Uhh, yeah, obscure... I'm gonna have to think real hard on this one particularly since you took all the obvious.

Judging by this list, most rappers apparently think there is only one metal band in existence. So I shall continue that trend:

"So say yes if its your caliber/
when I pop shit and rock shit like Metallica"

- Das EFX, "Real Hip Hop"

Oh, also:

"More guns than roses/Foes is
shaking in their boots, invisible bully like The Gooch"

- Notorious B.I.G., "Flava in the Ear (Remix)"

Before a Charlie/RDJ debate escalates, this is something I thought I'd pass along after reading the blog last night.

I had a dream that I was friends with a couple of the guys in that band Incubus (popular in the late '90s/early 2000s, one of those rock bands with a DJ). Anyway, they were playing this huge outdoor festival in front of at least 100,000 people. They asked me to come on stage and play guitar with them for the last couple of songs in their set, which I did.

As I'm walking off the stage with the band, who do I bump into but RDJ! I'm like, "Hey man, what's up? What are you doing here?" He says, "I'm closing the festival." He then goes on stage carrying his guitar, gives one of his patented RDJ intros and starts playing country music--negating all the rocking Incubus and I just did!

See how HHK permeates the subconscious?

I'll let those two get back to their tete-a-tete now.

1) Great dream, Van. But I should advise you that the next time your subconscious wants to use my likeness in one of its nocturnal productions, it will have to talk to my people to avoid possible litigation. Intellectual property's a bitch, dawg.

2) I think the little poem I wrote on the comments section of the last post is (in context) the funniest thing I've ever posted anywhere. My 12-year-old self is still giggling at the bathroom humor.

Um. . . to get back on track. .

Da Bush Babees - The Love Song
"I can all the way from Brooklyn to present my rep,
Lyrically deep like sleep I rock hard like Led Zepp."

Dammit. . .

I misspelled! Should be "I came all the way," not "can all the way."

Grrrrr!

Crazy old thread, but I found another one: Funkdoobiest's "Where's It At" also name-drops Metallica.
