ladies and gentlemen... welcome our guest blogger, Shawn J.
Hello all,
This is the one and only Shawn J. The Championship is almost upon us, and yes I'm STILL HYPE. However, as hype as I normally am, this time of year brings about a period of sadness and deep thought for me. And while there will be plenty of faces in the crowd that will cheer us on, there is one that I would give almost anything to have at the Highline Ballroom. My mom.
January 29 will mark the 8th anniversary of her passing on into the afterlife, and not a day goes by that I don't think of her.
So my question to you all is, is there anyone you would love to spend another day moment with?
And for the competitors, who would you want in the crowd to watch?

My uncle who passed away when I was 8 would have enjoyed the show. He had a real good sense of humor.
My Grandpa Andy (Andor). He was born in 1910 in Hungary, and lived through both World Wars. In WWII he was in a forced labour camp run by the pro-Nazi Hungarian army -- he was fortunate not to be sent to a far worse fate, as a Jew -- his parents weren't so lucky. Brought his family (including my Dad), amid terrible odds, to Canada by escaping during the anti-Communist Revolution of 1956. Worked as a house painter for many years to support the fam. Through it all, the most joy-filled man you can imagine, and full of pride for his large family: "What a family we are having here," he would exclaim. He never got tired of my need for attention, always acceding to my requests/demands that he "announce" me as a circus acrobat while I walked along curb edges or jumped off fire hydrants at age five. He'd laugh his big laugh and bellow, "Ladies and gentlemen, the world famous acrobat, Dániel Máté."
I wonder what he'd say if he could be on the mic this Friday.
Definitely my grandmother.
It would have to be my dad, Van the Man Sr., for sure.
i had a brother die 15 years ago after just one short year on this plane. i'd love to see what he would have become.
My grandmother would have had a blast at this event. She was quite a gambler - Las Vegas, the race track, and every weekend pissing her friends off and taking their money. We were best buds - I made 10% commission on her earnings. She died when I was 15 but her birthday was on Jan 29th so it would have been a great present for her to come watch.
well.. it's like I knew!
