Dope Friggin' Clean Versions.

it's Wednesday.

and starting today, it's the start of Wex's Wednesdays.

what that means is, every Wednesday (until i forget, go out of town, etc) i will be bring you a list of some sort to discuss. hip hop related, of course. it's like Letterman's top 10 list or whatever. but it doesn't have to be 10. hopefully, this will encourage some message-board-style conversation, debate, whateva whateva.

ok. so today's list is dedicated to dope clean versions. they're clean, but they still sound good. and you can play them around ya moms.

in no particular order.

1. "hip hop" - dead prez
2. "brooklyn zoo" - ol' dirty bastard
3. "nuthin but a g thang" - dr dre
4. "protect ya neck" - wu-tang clan
5. "players ball" - outkast

I couldn't think of any dope clean versions right off the bat, but how about side 2 of Eazy Duz It? Those tracks are pretty fly and they don't have curses in 'em. Side 1 on the other hand ...

What a coincidence; my boyfriend's brother was over the other day, and "Brooklyn Zoo" was on, and he was saying how he likes the clean version better, also because of "From a NUH! Who couldn't figga!" However, I have to disagree with RDJ's assessment of "Lovin' You Tonight." Without R. Kelly crooning "I'm fucking you tonight" with apparent sincerity, it's devoid of the irony that makes the song so funny.

Ah, but Emily, what about the extra double-scoop irony of a song that's clearly about no-love, down-and-dirty emotionless sex, originally titled as such, being converted into a would-be love song? And why?: for the radio, of course!

Knawmean?

Hmmm, I never thought of it that way. I may have to reconsider.

Granted, the header was "Dope Clean Versions", not "Silly Clean Versions". So I see your point, Emilem.

I hope they never made a clean version of "It Takes Two".

It would break my heart to actually hear them saying "fuck the big mac"

:) That should be its own list: songs that could/should never have clean versions, and/or suggestions of those impossible clean titles/lyrics.

e.g.

N.W.A.'s "Darn The Police"
Ice-T's "Ladies L.G.D.A.H.T. (Let's Get Disrobed And Hug Tonight)"
"Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nuthin Ta Mess Wit"

Actually, it should be "Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nuthin To Interfere Wit'."

How about Akineyle's "Love" Me For Free?

The new Snoop/Akon joint fell victim to the same editing program as Kells, even Amazon lists the song title as "I wanna fuck you" but on the radio and video its "Love you", of course.

I alwyas liked/laughed at snoop and dre's Next Episode. One of Nate Dogg's best lines of the decade was left on the cutting room floor: "Hope you ready for the next episode
HeyyyeyyyeEYEYyyyEYYYY....
(Pregnant pause) ...
everday!"

Actually, it woulda been even funnier if they had had Nate sing "Pregnant Pause Everyday"

hah!

agreed about the nate dogg clean cut... why even bother keeping the "everday"?

i feel like if i was the guy in charge of creating clean versions... the world would be a better place.
